Background

GB News launched on June 13, 2021, positioning itself as an alternative to what its founders described as a left-leaning British media establishment. Former BBC presenter Andrew Neil was a co-founder and the channel's initial on-air figurehead but departed after just three months, reportedly over disagreements with management about the channel's direction. The network quickly assembled a lineup of high-profile right-wing and pro-Brexit personalities, including Nigel Farage and Jacob Rees-Mogg. Since launch, GB News has accumulated losses exceeding £130 million, kept solvent by repeated capital injections from its principal backers. UK broadcast regulator Ofcom found the channel in breach of its rules 12 times in its first few years of operation, including a £100,000 fine in October 2024 for an impartiality breach involving a programme featuring former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak; in February 2025, however, GB News won a High Court judicial review that found Ofcom had itself been insufficiently impartial in its treatment of the channel. Co-owner Paul Marshall acquired The Spectator magazine in September 2024 for approximately £100 million, broadening his right-of-center UK media holdings. Marshall also spoke at a MAGA-affiliated event in 2025, calling on Trump's America to 'come and save' Britain, signaling the channel's close ideological ties to the wider nationalist-conservative movement on both sides of the Atlantic.
