Background

GBH traces its origins to 1951, when WGBH began broadcasting in Boston, building on educational lecture traditions stretching back to the Lowell Institute's public programs of the 1830s. It grew into one of the most significant public broadcasters in the country, at one point producing roughly one-third of PBS's primetime programming, including landmark series such as Frontline and American Experience. The organization holds licenses for PBS and several NPR member stations across Massachusetts, making it a dominant force in New England public media. In August 2020, the WGBH Educational Foundation rebranded publicly as GBH to reflect its broader digital and multi-platform identity. The Trump administration's second term delivered a major financial blow: Congress eliminated more than $1 billion in public media funding in 2025, costing GBH an estimated $18–20 million per year, which triggered multiple rounds of layoffs totaling more than 80 positions by late 2025. GBH responded by launching a $225 million 'Fund the Future' campaign and secured $500,000 from the state of Massachusetts in 2026. In May 2026, GBH announced a planned merger with Springfield-based New England Public Media.
