Background

Geo News launched in October 2002 as a Urdu-language news channel from the Jang Group, which Mir Khalil-ur-Rahman founded and his son Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman now leads. It grew into one of Pakistan's most-watched news channels, and it also runs English-language and digital outlets. In 2007 the Musharraf government took it off air for a time during a dispute over its coverage. In June 2014 the regulator suspended its license for 15 days after it aired accusations against the ISI and its chief over an attack on its journalist Hamid Mir. The group has said its signals have been disrupted and its newspaper distribution blocked on several occasions. In March 2020 the National Accountability Bureau arrested Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman over a 1986 land transaction; he was later acquitted, and the Committee to Protect Journalists criticized the arrest. Critics, including some politicians, have accused the channel of bias at various times, and press-freedom groups describe heavy pressure on Pakistani media. In 2026 Washington has dealt closely with Pakistan's military leadership, and Geo's coverage of that is best judged by reading its reporting directly.
