Geo TV
Pakistani private commercial media (centrist, establishment-adjacent liberal-leaning)
Background
Geo TV launched in 2002 as part of the Jang Group, a publishing empire founded by Mir Khalil-ur-Rahman, whose son Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman expanded it into broadcasting. Its arrival ended the state's monopoly on television news in Pakistan, and it helped drive the boom in private news channels. It has historically been seen as more liberal and more willing to challenge the military than many rivals. In 2014, after gunmen attacked journalist Hamid Mir, the channel aired accusations against the ISI intelligence agency, which led to regulatory penalties, suspensions and distribution blocks. Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau in March 2020 in a land-purchase corruption case and was released after months in custody. The group has also faced court summons over unpaid staff salaries. Critics say it is sometimes pressured into self-censorship, while others see it as aligned with Pakistan's establishment on foreign policy. In 2026 its coverage of the US under the second Trump administration has been largely news-driven, focusing on the Iran war, sanctions and Pakistan's role as a go-between, with no consistent pro- or anti-administration line.
