Background

The Georgia Recorder launched in August 2019 as one of States Newsroom's state-level digital outlets, focused on connecting Georgia public policy to the people and communities it affects. States Newsroom itself was incubated in 2017 through the Hopewell Fund, a fiscal sponsor linked to progressive causes, before incorporating as an independent 501(c)(3) in 2019. The Recorder covers Georgia state government, elections, health, education, and criminal justice, publishing all content free of charge. Founding editor John McCosh, a veteran journalist, retired in May 2025, and the outlet announced a redesigned editorial direction in June 2025 under new leadership. Critics — particularly from conservative watchdog groups like the Capital Research Center and InfluenceWatch — have argued that States Newsroom's donor base, which prominently includes progressive foundations, shapes story selection toward left-leaning policy priorities, even if individual news reports strive for factual accuracy.
