Background

Gizmodo was founded in 2002 by Peter Rojas as a gadget-review blog within Nick Denton's Gawker Media network. It grew into one of the most-read technology sites on the internet, known for breaking hardware scoops and irreverent commentary. Gawker Media collapsed in 2016 after a jury awarded Hulk Hogan (Terry Bollea) $140 million in a privacy lawsuit widely believed to have been funded by venture capitalist Peter Thiel; Univision Communications then purchased Gawker's surviving properties for $135 million and grouped them under the newly formed Gizmodo Media Group. In 2019, private-equity firm Great Hill Partners bought those properties for a reported sum under $50 million, renaming the unit G/O Media and installing Jim Spanfeller as CEO; a round of layoffs followed almost immediately despite earlier assurances to the contrary. Under G/O Media, Gizmodo expanded its political and social coverage alongside its traditional tech focus, and media-bias trackers such as Media Bias/Fact Check and AllSides consistently rated it as left-leaning. In June 2024, G/O Media sold Gizmodo to Keleops AG, a European tech-media group that already operated major French-language tech sites including 01net and Journal du Geek; Keleops pledged to retain the full editorial staff. Keleops further expanded its U.S. footprint in 2025 by acquiring Kotaku, a gaming site also formerly part of G/O Media. Gizmodo has maintained its left-of-center editorial voice under Keleops ownership and its coverage of the second Trump administration — including on AI policy, press freedom, and federal regulatory moves — has been broadly critical.
