Background

The Global Times launched in 1993 as a Chinese-language offshoot of the People's Daily, and an English edition followed in 2009. It is known for a populist, nationalist style that is more combative than its parent paper. Hu Xijin was editor-in-chief from 2005 to December 2021 and shaped that voice. He has since stayed on as a commentator. The paper is a state-controlled outlet, so its editorials and opinion pieces generally track Chinese government and Party positions. Its editorials are often read abroad as signals of Beijing's thinking, although they are not formal government statements. It has been criticized by Western governments and press groups for propaganda and for promoting disputed claims, for example on COVID-19's origins, Xinjiang and Hong Kong. During Trump's second term, its opinion coverage has typically attacked tariffs, export controls and Taiwan-related moves as coercive. It has also stressed China's readiness for talks and cooperation on its own terms, so its posture is mixed rather than uniformly hostile.
