Background

Founded in 1844 as a Reform-movement paper, The Globe and Mail took its current name in 1936 after a merger of the Globe and The Mail and Empire. It was long associated with Canada's business and political establishment, publishing from Toronto but distributing nationally, and is often described as Canada's paper of record. FP Publications owned it starting in 1965, and the Thomson family's corporation acquired it in 1980; after a period of partial ownership by BCE (which also owned CTV), Woodbridge reacquired full control by 2015. Editorially, it has endorsed Conservative candidates far more often than Liberals in federal elections since 1980, though it declined to endorse any party in the 2019 and 2021 elections. Media watchdogs such as AllSides rate it center, while Media Bias/Fact Check rates it right-center with high factual accuracy; its opinion pages are widely seen as centre-right and business-friendly. Because Canada has been a direct target of Trump-era tariffs and trade threats, the paper's news and opinion coverage of the administration since 2025 has skewed critical, especially on trade policy, while maintaining more neutral, fact-based reporting on other U.S. political topics.
