Background

Grist was founded in April 1999 by journalist Chip Giller in Seattle as a daily online environmental newsletter, initially operating as a project of the Earth Day Network. In 2003 it separated from that affiliation and secured its own 501(c)(3) nonprofit status, establishing full editorial independence. For its first decade it was known for a sardonic, irreverent tone that distinguished it from traditional environmental advocacy publications. In 2017, CEO Brady Piñero Walkinshaw — a former Gates Foundation program officer and Washington state legislator — was recruited to professionalize the newsroom, raising its annual revenue from roughly $3 million to $11 million by 2019 and expanding its staff to around 40 journalists in nearly 20 states, making it the largest dedicated climate newsroom in the United States. The outlet shifted its editorial emphasis toward solutions journalism and environmental justice, targeting audiences beyond the traditional white environmentalist readership. Nikhil Swaminathan, formerly editor-in-chief, later became CEO. Grist's funders are predominantly left-leaning foundations, and its coverage consistently reflects a view that climate change demands urgent government action; it does not present itself as politically neutral and makes no claim to covering both sides of climate science as a genuine debate. During the Trump administration's second term, Grist has published extensively critical coverage of EPA rollbacks, the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement, and cuts to federal climate research.
