Background

The Haitian Times was founded on October 27, 1999, in Brooklyn by Garry Pierre-Pierre, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and former New York Times reporter, alongside editor Yves Colon, who departed after two months. Pierre-Pierre then assumed full editorial leadership and served as publisher for 25 years. The paper launched as a weekly English-language print publication serving Haitian Americans in the New York metropolitan area. In 2012, it converted to a digital-only format, allowing it to reach Haitian diaspora readers worldwide and grow to roughly 150,000 unique monthly visitors. Financially, it has operated as a for-profit company while supplementing revenue with journalism grants and, more recently, city government advertising. In January 2025 — timed symbolically to Haitian Independence Day — Pierre-Pierre stepped aside and handed the publisher and editor-in-chief role to Vania André, his longtime editorial partner. During the 2024 U.S. presidential election, the outlet played a prominent role in pushing back against false claims, spread by Donald Trump and JD Vance, that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio, were eating pets; that reporting earned the outlet the 2025 Maria Ressa Prize for Courage in Journalism from the University of Maryland's Merrill College of Journalism. Since Trump's second term began in January 2025, the outlet has reported critically on the administration's termination of Temporary Protected Status for approximately 350,000 Haitians and the subsequent start of deportation flights to Haiti.
