Background

The Herald and News traces its roots to the Evening Herald, founded in 1906 in Klamath Falls, and the Klamath News, launched in 1923; the two merged on June 1, 1942, to form the Herald and News. For decades it operated as a locally focused daily serving a rural, politically conservative corner of southern Oregon. The paper later became part of Pioneer Newspapers, the Seattle-based chain owned primarily by the Jim Scripps family. In 2017, Pioneer News Group sold its media holdings — including the Herald and News — to the Adams Publishing Group (now Adams MultiMedia), which operates more than 30 daily papers across roughly 20 states. A significant turning point came in March 2022, when the paper's entire editorial staff — including editor Tim Trainor and all three reporters, two of whom had been partially funded by the nonprofit Report for America — resigned, citing low pay and inadequate investment in journalism. Adams said it would rely on freelancers and company staff from out of state while rebuilding; by December 2022 the paper reduced its print schedule from four days a week to two. Despite the ownership chain and staff upheaval, the paper has maintained a generally fact-based local record; Media Bias/Fact Check places it left-center based on editorial and opinion content, while acknowledging balance in its news coverage. Its coverage of national politics, including the Trump administration, is limited given its local orientation.
