Background
Hungarian Conservative launched in April 2021 as a bimonthly English-language magazine intended to carry Hungarian conservative thought to international audiences. It is published by BL Nonprofit Kft. and sponsored by the Batthyány Lajos Foundation, a nonprofit established in 1991 on the initiative of Hungary's first democratically elected prime minister, József Antall. By the early 2020s the Foundation had become a significant channel for Hungarian government media spending, receiving billions of forints directly from the Cabinet Office of the Prime Minister, according to Hungarian watchdog K-Monitor. Editor-in-chief Gergely Dobozi oversees the publication, while editor-at-large John O'Sullivan also heads the Danube Institute, a government-sponsored think tank with formal ties to the Heritage Foundation. The magazine's content consistently reflects Orbán government priorities: strong support for tight immigration controls, skepticism of EU authority, and favorable coverage of the transnational conservative networks linking Budapest to American right-wing circles.
