IBTimes Australia
U.S.-owned general/business tabloid, center-left-leaning content aggregation
Background
International Business Times was launched in the U.S. in 2005 by Etienne Uzac and Johnathan Davis; the Australian edition, IBT Australia Pty Ltd, was incorporated in Sydney in 2006. At its peak it drew roughly 20 million monthly visitors, helped by advertising deals such as its forex-section sponsorship from GO Markets. IBT Media's founders were linked to followers of Korean-American religious figure David Jang, and in 2013 the company acquired Newsweek, rebranding as Newsweek Media Group in 2017; that group split back into separate Newsweek and IBT Media companies in 2018 amid a Manhattan DA money-laundering investigation into Uzac and the company. A 2016 BuzzFeed News investigation found IBTimes Australia's content was largely produced by writers in the Philippines while its listed Sydney office was effectively a "ghost" address, prompting IBT Media to say it was consolidating editorial control from its U.S. and U.K. hubs. Media Bias/Fact Check rates the broader International Business Times network as left-center with mostly factual reporting, funded mainly through online advertising; the outlet has no distinct editorial brand of its own on U.S. politics and largely republishes wire and syndicated stories with minimal original political commentary.
