Background

INDY Week was founded in April 1983 by Steve Schewel as the North Carolina Independent, a bi-weekly tabloid published out of Durham, NC, with an early staff of seven and sixty-one community shareholders. Katherine Fulton served as founding editor from 1983 to 1992; the paper was renamed the Independent in 1985 and shifted to weekly publication in 1989 as the Independent Weekly before eventually rebranding as INDY Week. In 2012 the paper was sold to ZM INDY, Inc., whose principals Mark Zusman and Richard Meeker also own Willamette Week in Portland, Oregon—the only alternative weekly in the country to have won a Pulitzer Prize for investigative reporting; Meeker later became the sole owner. Throughout its existence INDY Week has been a member of the Association of Alternative Newsmedia and has openly described its mission as providing progressive news and culture coverage across the Triangle. Facing the ad-revenue headwinds that have squeezed alt-weeklies nationally, in 2023 INDY entered a management partnership with The Assembly NC, a subscription-funded digital outlet, which took over day-to-day business operations with an option to acquire the paper in the future. The publication remains free and is funded by local advertising, reader-supported memberships (the INDY Press Club), and The Assembly's operational resources; it has also placed reporters through Report for America. Its election endorsements have consistently supported Democratic candidates, and its coverage of the Trump administration's second term has highlighted negative local impacts—federal grant cancellations, USAID furloughs, and VA hiring freezes—while giving favorable framing to anti-administration protests.
