Background

Jessica Lessin founded The Information in December 2013 after leaving The Wall Street Journal, where she had spent roughly eight years covering Silicon Valley. She financed the launch with less than $1 million of her own family money and has never taken outside investment, retaining sole ownership through Lessin Media Company. The outlet launched with a then-unusual $399-per-year paywall and no advertising, a model widely doubted at the time. It reached profitability within roughly two and a half years.
