ION Analytics
Global financial industry — apolitical, B2B
Background
The core of ION Analytics traces back to Mergermarket, a financial intelligence service founded in December 1999 by Caspar Hobbs, Charlie Welsh, and Gawn Rowan Hamilton on the premise that the M&A market lacked actionable intelligence. The Financial Times Group acquired it in 2006 for £101 million, expanding it into a suite of fixed-income and deal-tracking products. Private equity firm BC Partners purchased the company — by then branded Acuris — from Pearson for £382 million in 2013 and accelerated product and geographic expansion, including nine acquisitions. Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC took a 31% stake in 2017. ION Investment Group, the Dublin-headquartered financial software company controlled by Andrea Pignataro, bought Acuris from BC Partners and GIC in 2019 for approximately £1.35 billion and folded it into a new division called ION Analytics alongside the separately acquired Dealogic (bought 2016). ION Analytics now operates roughly 40 newsrooms globally and an archive of more than two million proprietary articles. Its editorial output — M&A scoops, leveraged-finance news, restructuring intelligence — is aimed exclusively at paying institutional clients and carries no discernible left-right political orientation; political developments are covered only insofar as they affect financial markets and regulation.
