Jacksonville Today
U.S. center-left, local nonprofit
Background
Jacksonville Today launched in November 2021 as a free daily email newsletter, an initiative by WJCT Public Media in response to the decline of local journalism in Jacksonville. WJCT — which has served Northeast Florida since 1958 as both a PBS television and NPR radio affiliate — expanded the outlet to a full website in spring 2022. The outlet is a member of the Institute for Nonprofit News, a network of more than 475 nonprofit newsrooms. Its founding funders included the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations and other community partners. In October 2025, WJCT announced it had become fully community-funded after roughly $2 million in state and federal revenue was eliminated, a transition it framed as a deliberate diversification strategy accelerated by government funding cuts. Media Bias/Fact Check rates WJCT as left-center in story selection with a high factual accuracy record. Jacksonville Today publishes original reporting alongside opinion columns, including work from veteran Florida political writer A.G. Gancarski. Its editorial coverage centers on Jacksonville city government, equity, urban development, and local policy rather than national commentary, though it has reported on how federal policy shifts — including funding cuts and regulatory changes during the Trump second term — affect the region.
