Background

Jalopnik launched in 2006 as part of Gawker Media, a blog network founded by Nick Denton, and became known for irreverent, opinionated car writing. After Gawker went bankrupt in 2016, Univision bought the network, and Jalopnik later passed to Gizmodo Media Group. In 2019 private equity firm Great Hill Partners bought Univision's digital properties, which became G/O Media. Under G/O Media the site went through layoffs, editor turnover, and cost-cutting, as the company sold or shut down many of its brands. In October 2024, G/O Media agreed to sell Jalopnik to Static Media, which had bought The Takeout from G/O earlier that year. Static Media's other properties include SlashFilm, Tasting Table, House Digest, and Chowhound, and it relies heavily on search traffic. Jalopnik's tone has stayed informal and opinionated, mixing news, reviews, and commentary. Its political coverage is mostly confined to topics that touch cars. In 2025-2026 it ran pieces on Trump's tariffs on European, Canadian, and imported-parts auto goods, generally framing them as harmful to jobs, profits, and prices. I could not load the Wikipedia article, so details of the site's early history come from my background knowledge and the search results rather than a fetched source.
