Background

Founded in 1841, it is among the oldest Jewish newspapers in the world and long served as the main voice of Britain's mainstream Jewish community. It collapsed financially in 2020 and was bought out of administration in April 2020 by a consortium led publicly by Robbie Gibb, a former Downing Street communications chief under Theresa May. The new owners placed it under a charitable trust, though the identities of all the backers were never disclosed, which drew criticism. Stephen Pollard edited it for years and took it in a strongly pro-Israel and anti-Corbyn direction; critics on the left described it as partisan. In 2024 freelancer Elon Perry was found to have fabricated material in several articles on the Gaza war. The paper removed his work, and columnists Jonathan Freedland, Hadley Freeman, David Baddiel and David Aaronovitch resigned. Daniel Schwammenthal has been editor since January 2025. Its current outlook is pro-Israel, with a focus on antisemitism and Israel-related politics, and its Trump coverage tends to be judged by how the administration treats Israel and Jewish concerns.
