Jonathan Turley was born in 1961 and earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago and his law degree from Northwestern University. He joined George Washington University Law School in 1990 and in 1998 was named the Shapiro Professor of Public Interest Law, the youngest chaired professor in the school's history. During President Clinton's 1998 impeachment hearings, Turley identified publicly as a liberal Democrat and testified against the impeachment, a stance that earned him praise from the left. Over the following two decades he became a frequent television legal analyst on NBC, CBS, and eventually Fox News, where he has been a full contributor since the mid-2010s. By the time of Trump's first impeachment proceedings, Turley's commentary had moved to a markedly more skeptical view of congressional Democrats' legal arguments, drawing criticism from former admirers and a Slate profile in 2022 questioning the shift.
