krcrtv
U.S. right-leaning (local ABC affiliate)
Background
The station began broadcasting in 1956 as KVIP-TV, launched by William B. Smullin's California Oregon Broadcasting Inc., initially as a primary NBC affiliate with secondary ABC programming. It was renamed KRCR in 1963 and switched to a full-time ABC affiliation in 1978. Over the following decades it changed hands among several regional broadcasters before being acquired by Sinclair Broadcast Group, which now owns it along with several low-power sister stations in the Redding-Chico-Eureka market (including MyNetworkTV, Antenna TV, Univision, and UniMás affiliates). Sinclair, one of the largest local-TV station owners in the U.S., has drawn national scrutiny for requiring its stations to air company-produced 'must-run' segments and commentary that critics say skew conservative, most notably a viral 2018 incident in which dozens of Sinclair anchors nationwide read an identical script questioning the reliability of other news outlets. KRCR's own local news coverage focuses on regional weather, wildfires, crime, and community affairs, with national/political content largely supplied through the ABC network feed and Sinclair's corporate news division rather than original local political reporting.
