Background

KSAT first went on the air on January 21, 1957, as KONO-TV, launched by Mission Telecasting Corporation, which was connected to the Roth family's KONO radio operation in San Antonio. Providence, Rhode Island–based The Outlet Company purchased the station in 1967 for $10.5 million and rebranded it KSAT-TV in February 1968. Ownership changed again in 1986 when The Outlet Company was taken private and sold KSAT to H&C Communications. In 1994, H&C sold KSAT — along with Houston's KPRC-TV — to The Washington Post Company for approximately $65 million, placing the station within its Post-Newsweek Stations division. When The Washington Post Company reorganized and spun off its newspaper holdings in 2013, it rebranded as Graham Holdings Company; its TV group later became Graham Media Group, which today operates seven stations including KSAT. The station has built a reputation as the dominant local news source in San Antonio, regularly leading market ratings. Multiple bias-rating organizations — including Media Bias/Fact Check and AllSides — rate KSAT as center or least-biased, citing balanced story selection, minimal editorializing, and strong factual sourcing. No major editorial scandals or ownership controversies have been widely reported in its recent history.
