KT Press
Rwandan government-aligned
Background
KT Press launched in March 2014 as a digital-first outlet under Kigali Today Ltd, aiming to be a 'forum for better understanding and unity' in Rwanda, and grew alongside its sister station KT Radio, which reaches over 80% of the country. Rwanda's media environment is tightly controlled by the state, and press-freedom monitors such as Human Rights Watch, Freedom House, and Reporters Without Borders have repeatedly flagged government pressure on nominally independent outlets, including withheld advertising and alleged administrative access to websites to remove critical stories. KT Press in particular has been criticized by observers, including commentary from analysts like David Himbara, for functioning more as a government mouthpiece than an independent outlet, often amplifying official messaging with limited scrutiny. It has nonetheless occasionally reported on internal government tensions, such as a 2026 dispute in which Kagame publicly defended a journalist against Rwanda's foreign minister. Under longtime managing director Jean Charles Kanamugire, who also chairs the Rwanda Journalists Association, the outlet built a large following, citing over 2.5 million social media followers and roughly 1.8 million daily KT Radio listeners. Leadership passed to editor-in-chief Dan Ngabonziza in late 2025. Its coverage of foreign affairs, including U.S. policy toward Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, tends to track and reinforce the Rwandan government's positions.
