KVCR
U.S. public media, mainstream/center-left-leaning
Background
KVCR-FM first signed on in November 1953 and was described as the first junior-college-owned radio station in Southern California. The FM license followed an FCC application in 1954. KVCR-TV began broadcasting in 1962 and is described as Southern California's oldest operating public television station. Both stations are licensed to the San Bernardino Community College District and operate from San Bernardino Valley College, serving as PBS and NPR members. Its in-house programs include the Emmy-winning public affairs show 'Inland Edition' and the bilingual children's show 'Learn With Me'. The stations have faced financial pressure, and California lawmakers approved about $4 million through AB 132 so KVCR could continue as the Inland Empire's only locally operated public media outlet. The 2025 federal rescission of Corporation for Public Broadcasting funding removed about $550,000 a year and put some local programs at risk. As a noncommercial public broadcaster tied to a public college district, it relies heavily on NPR and PBS content and generally follows standard public-media journalistic norms. Critics on the right often view NPR- and PBS-affiliated outlets as left-leaning, while the station presents itself as a community service. I did not verify any specific editorial controversies, and this profile is based on a limited set of sources.
