Background

The Kyiv Independent was founded in November 2021, about three months before Russia's full-scale invasion, by a group of journalists who were dismissed from the Kyiv Post amid a dispute with that paper's owner over editorial independence. It quickly became one of the most-followed English-language sources on the war, building a large international readership through social media and on-the-ground war coverage. The outlet deliberately structured itself so no single owner or oligarch could control it, relying instead on a large base of paying members and donations, supplemented by grants from Western democracy- and press-freedom-support organizations. It has faced criticism from Russian state and pro-Russian outlets, which have labeled it a Western-funded propaganda operation, a characterization the outlet disputes by publishing its funding sources. Editorially, it is unambiguously pro-Ukrainian-sovereignty and critical of the Kremlin, and it has increasingly scrutinized the Trump administration's diplomatic approach to the war, including its outreach to Moscow and pressure on Kyiv to accept unfavorable peace terms. It is widely regarded internationally as a credible, if advocacy-inflected, wartime news source rather than a neutral arbiter between Ukraine and Russia.
