Background

Jed Sunden founded the Kyiv Post in 1995 as an English-language weekly for Ukraine's expatriate and business community. Mohammad Zahoor bought it in 2009. Under Zahoor it became known for investigative reporting on corruption and for criticism of the government of Viktor Yanukovych. Adnan Kivan bought the paper in 2018. In November 2021 he fired its editor-in-chief and suspended publication, after staff said he had pressured them to change coverage. Most of the newsroom left and launched The Kyiv Independent. Staff accounts said the shutdown was retaliation for the journalists' resistance to the owner's interference, and Kivan denied wrongdoing. The Kyiv Post resumed publishing in 2022 with a largely new staff after Russia's full-scale invasion. Critics, including former staff, say it has been less independent and less investigative than before 2021. Its coverage now is generally supportive of Ukraine's government and war effort. Recent articles and opinion pieces covering Trump describe his team's approach to the war as transactional and criticize the U.S. for drawing back its support. It also reports neutrally on U.S. announcements such as Patriot production.
