Background

La Opinión was founded in 1926 by Ignacio E. Lozano Sr. to serve Los Angeles's Mexican and Latino community, timing its launch to Mexican Independence Day; it marked its 100th anniversary in 2026. The Lozano family ran it for decades before selling a 50% stake to Times Mirror in 1990, which passed to Tribune Company after a 1990s/2000 merger. In 2004, the paper's leadership bought back full control and merged it with El Diario La Prensa of New York to form ImpreMedia, with longtime publisher Monica Lozano later becoming ImpreMedia's CEO. My Code (a multicultural marketing and media company) acquired majority ownership of ImpreMedia in 2022. Editorially, La Opinión has taken outspoken stances on immigration and Latino civil rights, most notably its 2020 Election Day front page urging voters to oust Donald Trump ("¡Que Se Vaya!"), and it has continued to center immigrant-community concerns, including coverage critical of immigration enforcement, during Trump's second term. Media-bias trackers generally classify it as left-leaning, reflecting both its editorial endorsements (which have favored Democratic candidates) and its advocacy-oriented coverage of issues affecting Latino and immigrant readers.
