Background
The paper traces its roots to the Clark County Review, first published in September 1909 by Charles C. Corkhill, Clark County's first sheriff, who intended it as a Democratic voice for early Las Vegas. Over the following decades it merged with competing Las Vegas papers and grew into the dominant daily in the region. In December 2015 casino magnate Sheldon Adelson purchased the paper for approximately $140 million through News + Media Capital Group LLC; the identity of the buyer was kept secret for weeks and only confirmed after investigative reporting, generating significant national attention. The secret, above-market acquisition fueled concerns that a major Republican donor was buying influence over a key swing-state newspaper. After the sale dozens of reporters and editors resigned, citing eroded editorial independence and management pressure on coverage. Sheldon Adelson died in January 2021; control of the paper passed to his widow, Dr. Miriam Adelson, and son-in-law Patrick Dumont. The editorial board has endorsed Republican presidential candidates and, during Trump's second term beginning in 2025, has published editorials praising his tax cuts (the One Big Beautiful Bill) and deregulation orders while occasionally criticizing specific policies such as tariffs. Media watchdogs rate it right-center in bias with generally high factual sourcing standards in its news pages.
