Background

The Las Vegas Sun was founded on May 21, 1950 by Hank Greenspun, initially under the name Las Vegas Free Press before being renamed later that summer. Greenspun secured early financing with help from prominent Las Vegas businessman Nate Mack. The paper built a reputation as a scrappy, crusading counterweight to the larger Las Vegas Review-Journal, though it also drew criticism for soft coverage of Greenspun's personal allies and combative coverage of his rivals. In 1990, facing financial strain, the family negotiated a Joint Operating Agreement (JOA) with the Review-Journal, sharing printing and business operations while maintaining separate editorial identities. A 2005 revision to the JOA embedded the Sun as a daily insert in the Review-Journal, making it largely dependent on its rival for distribution. That 2005 update was later found to be legally defective because it was never signed by the U.S. attorney general as required; after the Review-Journal (itself bought by casino magnate Sheldon Adelson's family in 2015) sought to end the arrangement, a federal court ruled the JOA unenforceable. The U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear the Sun's appeal in early 2026, and on April 3, 2026, the Review-Journal stopped printing the Sun, ending its print edition after 76 years. The Sun now publishes online only. Editorially, it has endorsed Democratic presidential candidates consistently and its opinion pages have been openly critical of the Trump administration during both his first and second terms, calling out policies on immigration, guns, tariffs, and civil liberties.
