Law360
U.S. legal trade press, center
Background
Law360 traces its roots to 2003, when Marius Meland founded Portfolio Media and launched a daily email newsletter covering intellectual property law. Meland partnered with Magnus Hoglund in 2004, and the pair expanded into other legal practice areas before formally launching the Law360 brand in 2006. The outlet grew rapidly as a subscription news service tailored to practicing lawyers, eventually employing more than 170 reporters and editors and publishing over 200 stories each business day. In March 2012, RELX acquired Portfolio Media and folded Law360 into its LexisNexis legal division, giving the outlet stable corporate backing but placing it inside a large commercial information company with no traditional media ownership. Law360 expanded internationally in 2020 with the launch of Law360 UK, targeting the British commercial legal market. The outlet has maintained a reputation for straight, fast-turnaround legal reporting and has carried a 'Least Biased / High Credibility' rating from Media Bias/Fact Check. A significant internal controversy erupted in 2025 when a LexisNexis vice president accused the newsroom of liberal political bias in its coverage of the Trump administration; management subsequently mandated a mandatory AI-powered 'bias detection' tool on every story, which drew a strong rebuke from the Law360 Union — representing more than 200 editorial staffers — with over 90 percent of union members signing a petition calling the tool coercive and a threat to editorial independence.
