Background

Lloyd's List traces its origins to Edward Lloyd's Coffee House in London, where merchants and insurance underwriters gathered to exchange shipping news; the publication in its recognizable form dates to 1734, making it one of the world's oldest continuously running journals. For nearly two centuries it operated under various arrangements tied to Lloyd's of London, the insurance market that grew out of the same coffee house. In 1884 it merged with the rival Shipping and Mercantile Gazette, and in 1914 the Corporation of Lloyd's resumed full editorial control. Through the 20th century it evolved from a listings sheet into a full daily newspaper covering international shipping markets, maritime law, finance, and trade policy. In the late 1990s it came under Informa PLC following a series of publishing-industry mergers. It ended daily print publication in November 2013 and moved entirely to digital delivery. In August 2022, Informa sold the Maritime Intelligence division — which includes Lloyd's List — to Montagu Private Equity for £385 million, and the business was reorganized under Maritime Insights & Intelligence Limited. The publication has no significant political controversies on record; its editorial reputation rests on factual, data-driven reporting for a professional shipping audience rather than political commentary.
