Background

Lithuanian radio broadcasting began in 1926 in Kaunas, then the temporary capital; television followed in 1957. LRT joined the European Broadcasting Union in 1993 after Lithuania restored independence from the Soviet Union. Its funding model — an automatic budget formula rather than an annual parliamentary vote — was designed to protect editorial independence. In late 2025 and early 2026, the Lithuanian government pushed amendments to the LRT Law that would lower the threshold for dismissing the director general from a two-thirds to a simple majority vote, freeze the budget through 2029, and expand the Council to 15 members while keeping a majority of seats politically appointed. The European Broadcasting Union, Reporters Without Borders, the European Federation of Journalists, and about 30 international media organizations warned the changes could expose LRT to political pressure; the amendments nonetheless passed in June 2026.
