Background

Maine Public began as the University of Maine System's public broadcasting service. Public radio started in 1970 when WMEH signed on from Bangor, and more stations followed over the next decade. In 1992 the university system's stations merged with WCBB, the PBS station for southern Maine, to form the Maine Public Broadcasting Corporation, which went on to operate as a private nonprofit. The network carries NPR and PBS programming and produces local news. It is often called MPBN, and it has used the name Maine Public in recent years. About 75% of its roughly $19 million budget came from private support before 2025. The July 2025 rescissions package pulled about $2.5 million a year in CPB grants, and CPB's board voted to dissolve in January 2026. As a result the network now depends more on donors. In 2026 it asked the state legislature for a $200,000 supplemental appropriation, and its CEO said it had not laid off staff as of the reporting available. Like most public media, it is generally seen as leaning center-left. Conservative outlets such as The Maine Wire have criticized its taxpayer support. I did not find notable editorial scandals in the sources I reviewed, and I could not verify a detailed record of its coverage of the second Trump administration, so the 'mostly neutral' rating is based on its standard newsroom approach.
