Background

Maine Public traces its roots to November 13, 1961, when WCBB signed on in Lewiston as Maine's first educational television station, founded as a joint venture of Colby, Bates, and Bowdoin colleges. The University of Maine System separately operated its own public radio and television stations. On July 1, 1992, the two organizations merged to form the Maine Public Broadcasting Corporation, creating a statewide nonprofit public broadcasting network. The combined network went through several rebrandings — 'Maine PBS' in 1998, 'MPBN' in 2005 — before settling on 'Maine Public' in 2016. It carries NPR programming on radio and PBS programming on television, supplemented by local news and public affairs content.
