Background

Bill Marler began his career as a food safety attorney in 1993 when he represented victims of the Jack-in-the-Box E. coli O157:H7 outbreak, one of the most significant foodborne illness events in U.S. history. In 1998, he co-founded Marler Clark, Inc., PS, widely described as the first American law firm dedicated exclusively to foodborne illness litigation. Marler Blog launched around 2004 and is hosted on the LexBlog legal blogging platform; Marler has personally written more than 5,000 posts and the blog draws roughly one million readers per year. In 2009, Marler also founded Food Safety News, a separate online news publication owned by Marler Clark. The blog's perspective is explicitly that of a plaintiffs' attorney and consumer advocate: it covers outbreak news, food recalls, regulatory actions, and legal cases, with a clear orientation toward stronger government oversight of the food supply. Marler has testified before Congress and was a prominent voice supporting the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act of 2011. Since the start of the Trump administration's second term in January 2025, the blog has been sharply critical of DOGE-driven FDA workforce reductions, the scaling back of FoodNet pathogen surveillance, and delays to the Food Traceability Final Rule — positions consistent with Marler's long-standing advocacy record.
