Background

Maryland Matters was founded on March 1, 2017, by veteran Maryland political journalist Josh Kurtz and Louis Peck. It launched publicly in early 2018 with seed funding from the Baltimore-based Robert W. Deutsch Foundation and its first hires, reporters Bruce DePuyt and Bill Zorzi. It was structured as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and became a member of the Institute for Nonprofit News. The outlet operated as a States Newsroom grantee for several years, with States Newsroom formally absorbing it more deeply into its network in July 2022. In February 2025, Kurtz departed and the outlet was fully integrated into States Newsroom, shedding its independent board and operating as a direct affiliate of the national network. Its parent, States Newsroom, has been described by critics as progressive and has drawn scrutiny for funding ties to Arabella Advisors-managed groups, though it does not accept advertising or corporate underwriting.
