The MNA was founded in 1903 and is one of the oldest nursing organizations in the United States; it played a foundational role in establishing the Nurse Practice Act, the RN license designation, and the first code of ethics for nurses in Massachusetts. For most of its history it operated as both a professional association and a collective bargaining union for registered nurses in the state. In 2009, the MNA became a founding affiliate of National Nurses United (NNU), the largest nurses' union in the country, which has since affiliated with the AFL-CIO; MNA retained the right to disaffiliate if it disagreed with NNU policy.
