Medical Economics
U.S. physician trade press, industry-oriented
Background
Medical Economics was founded in October 1923, making it one of the oldest continuously published physician trade magazines in the United States. It spent decades as an independent specialty publication before cycling through several corporate owners, including a period under UBM Life Sciences Group. In 2019, MJH Associates — founded by Michael J. Hennessy Sr. — acquired Medical Economics along with more than 20 other healthcare brands from UBM Life Sciences, positioning itself as the largest independently owned medical communications company in North America. In November 2021, investment firm BDT Capital Partners acquired a majority stake in MJH Life Sciences, while the Hennessy family retained a significant minority ownership position. The publication is advertiser-supported and distributed free to physicians, with revenue derived chiefly from pharmaceutical, device, and health industry advertisers — a model common to medical trade media. Editorially, it focuses on the business side of medicine: practice management, reimbursement, billing, coding, staffing, and regulatory changes, with little political opinion content. The outlet celebrated its centennial in 2023 and positions itself as a resource for independent and office-based physicians navigating consolidation pressures and shifting payment models.
