Mexico News Daily
Mexico expat media, center-left
Background
Mexico News Daily was founded in 2014 by Tony Richards, a Canadian expat who recognized that English-speaking residents and visitors had no dedicated source for Mexican news in their language. Richards launched it as an email newsletter and small website; it grew through the mid-2010s by targeting expats, retirees, tourists, and investors interested in Mexico. The outlet expanded its beat over the years to cover politics, business, culture, real estate, travel, and lifestyle across Mexico. In September 2022, Richards sold the publication to Travis and Tamanna Bembenek, a Wisconsin-educated couple living in San Miguel de Allende; Travis became CEO with a stated goal of improving Mexico's image abroad and attracting expats, tourists, and investors. Under the Bembeneks, the outlet dropped all advertising and moved to a fully reader-funded subscription model, a relatively uncommon structure in digital media. Media Bias/Fact Check rates it Left-Center with high factual reporting, citing story selection that tends to favor left-leaning perspectives and coverage that has not been sympathetic to right-leaning U.S. administrations; AllSides rates it Center. Coverage of the second Trump administration — including tariffs on Mexican goods, U.S. pressure over cartels, and the threat of military action — has generally reflected concern about the impact of those policies on Mexico and its residents.
