Background

Mexico Solidarity Media was launched around 2019–2020 as a committee of the Mexico Solidarity Project, which was founded that same year by Bruce Hobson and Meizhu Lui, both longtime members of Liberation Road, a U.S. Marxist organization. The project grew directly from enthusiasm over the 2018 election of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) as Mexico's president, viewing his administration and the ruling Morena party as a historic breakthrough for the Latin American left. The outlet targets English-language readers whom its founders believe receive distorted or corporate-skewed coverage of Mexico from mainstream U.S. media. It publishes original analysis, reprints from left-wing Mexican sources, Spanish-to-English translations, and produces the 'Soberania: The Mexican Politics Podcast,' hosted by editor José Luis Granados Ceja and co-host Kurt Hackbarth. The outlet is fully volunteer-run and supported by reader donations, with no advertising or corporate sponsorship.
