Background

The Miami Herald traces its origins to the Miami Evening Record, founded on September 15, 1903. After financial difficulties, attorney Frank B. Shutts acquired the paper with backing from railroad magnate Henry Flagler and renamed it the Miami Herald on December 1, 1910. Publisher John S. Knight bought the Herald in 1937 and built it into the flagship of what became Knight Ridder, one of the largest U.S. newspaper chains. In 2006, the McClatchy Company purchased Knight Ridder and assumed ownership of the Herald. McClatchy filed for bankruptcy in February 2020, and Chatham Asset Management — a New Jersey hedge fund that had been a major creditor — acquired the company out of bankruptcy later that year. In 2024, McClatchy merged with magazine publisher A360media to form McClatchy Media Company, all still under Chatham's control. Throughout this ownership history the Herald has maintained a center-left editorial posture, endorsing Democratic presidential candidates and publishing investigative work with a progressive civic bent. Its most consequential recent investigation was reporter Julie K. Brown's 2018 'Perversion of Justice' series exposing how federal prosecutors shielded sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein; the series led to Epstein's 2019 federal arrest, the eventual prosecution of Ghislaine Maxwell, and the resignation of Labor Secretary Alex Acosta. Brown received a special Pulitzer Prize citation for that work in 2026. The paper has also won numerous Pulitzer Prizes over its history and, in 2026, was a finalist for its joint investigation with WLRN into fatal safety failures at Florida's Brightline passenger rail. Like many regional papers under hedge-fund ownership, the Herald has faced repeated layoffs and newsroom contractions.
