Background
Militarnyi launched on October 14, 2008 under the name 'Ukrainian Military Portal,' initially publishing thematic military news and video content about Ukraine's security forces. After Russia's 2014 seizure of Crimea and incursion into Donbas, the team reorganized into a volunteer group called 'Military Aid,' focused on supporting Ukrainian forces. In February 2017, it formalized as a nonprofit under the 'Ukrainian Military Center' and rebranded as Militarnyi. Co-founder Taras Chmut also serves as director of the Come Back Alive charitable foundation, which funds Ukrainian military equipment purchases. By the time of Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022, Militarnyi had become the go-to Ukrainian-language source for military hardware analysis, order-of-battle reporting, and weapons delivery tracking, attracting over 2 million unique visitors per month. It publishes in both Ukrainian and English. The outlet does not carry typical commercial advertising and is funded primarily through direct reader contributions. Its editorial orientation is strongly in favor of Ukraine's military success, and since January 2025 its reporting has treated Trump administration decisions — including halting aid, omitting Ukraine from the 2027 defense budget request, and warning Kyiv against strikes on Russian targets — as adverse to Ukraine's war effort.
