Minnesota Lawyer
U.S. legal trade press (professional B2B, not politically oriented)
Background
Minnesota Lawyer traces its origins to a publication that began in November 1985, with a relaunched version appearing in September 1997 under Finance and Commerce, Inc., a Minneapolis business-media firm founded by James Dolan and Cherry Tree Investments. Finance and Commerce also published the long-running daily Finance & Commerce (founded 1887), and Minnesota Lawyer operated within that stable for roughly two decades. In December 2016, Minnesota Lawyer merged with the Saint Paul Legal Ledger Capitol Report to form Saint Paul Legal Ledger Minnesota Lawyer, expanding its reach across the Twin Cities legal market. Ownership passed to BridgeTower Media, which had been built as a stand-alone B2B information subsidiary of Gannett Co., covering legal, financial, construction, and government sectors across more than 20 regional U.S. markets. In November 2020, Transom Capital Group—a Los Angeles private equity firm with over $600 million in assets under management—acquired BridgeTower Media from Gannett and has operated it since. The publication functions primarily as a professional resource: it covers appellate decisions, notable opinions, verdicts, attorney recognition programs, and public legal notices. It is not known for political opinion journalism, and its editorial track record reflects trade-press norms—serving attorneys and legal professionals—rather than partisan positions.
