Background
Minnesota Public Radio was founded on January 22, 1967, at Saint John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota, by broadcaster Bill Kling and Father Colman Barry, starting as a classical-music station. Over the following decades it expanded into a statewide network and developed a substantial news operation, MPR News, covering Minnesota politics, policy, and culture. A pivotal financial moment came in 1998, when MPR sold its for-profit commercial subsidiary, Rivertown Trading Company, for $124 million; the proceeds seeded an endowment that stood at roughly $317 million as of fiscal year 2025. In 2004, American Public Media Group was created as a nonprofit parent to coordinate MPR and American Public Media, the production arm responsible for nationally distributed programs such as Marketplace. Media bias analysts rate MPR News as Left-Center (Media Bias Fact Check) or Lean Left (AllSides), reflecting moderate progressive tendencies in story selection and editorial framing rather than outright advocacy. The outlet maintains high marks for factual accuracy from the same analysts. During the second Trump term, MPR News has covered federal immigration crackdowns, rollbacks of federal education funding, and the administration's cuts to Corporation for Public Broadcasting appropriations — the last of which directly strained MPR's own budget. Its reporting has generally framed these developments in terms of harm to Minnesota residents and institutions, placing it in a broadly critical posture toward the current administration.
