Background

MSNBC launched on July 15, 1996 as a joint venture between NBC and Microsoft, with Microsoft investing $221 million for a 50 percent stake; the name combined 'MSN' (Microsoft's web portal) and 'NBC.' Microsoft sold its stake in the cable channel in 2005 and exited the companion website in 2012, leaving the network wholly owned by NBCUniversal, itself a Comcast subsidiary. Through the early 2000s the channel blended news and opinion, but by the late 2000s it pivoted sharply toward liberal opinion programming with hosts such as Keith Olbermann, Chris Matthews, Ed Schultz, and Rachel Maddow, surpassing CNN in primetime ratings for the first time in 2010. In November 2024, Comcast announced plans to spin off most of its cable networks — MSNBC, CNBC, USA Network, E!, SYFY, Golf Channel, and others — into a new independent company, later named Versant. Ahead of that transaction, MSNBC rebranded as 'MS NOW' on November 15, 2025, adopting a backronym ('My Source for News, Opinion, and the World') to remove NBC's trademarked branding; the network also relocated from 30 Rockefeller Plaza to Versant's headquarters in the former New York Times Building in Manhattan. The Versant spin-off closed January 2, 2026, making MS NOW a unit of a standalone publicly traded media company. The Maddow Blog (now at ms.now/maddowblog) is the network's companion political commentary site tied to The Rachel Maddow Show. Media bias trackers including AllSides and Ad Fontes Media consistently rate the network and Maddow's show as left-leaning; critics and the White House have publicly characterized its coverage as adversarial toward Republican administrations.
