Background

MSNBC launched in 1996 as a joint venture between NBC News and Microsoft, initially operating as a rolling cable news channel. Through the 2000s it shifted progressively toward liberal opinion programming, with hosts like Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow defining its editorial identity. A 2013 Pew Research Center report found that 85 percent of MSNBC's content was opinion or commentary — the highest ratio of any major cable news network studied. Maddow's nightly show became the network's signature program; in 2022 she stepped back to a once-weekly format but remained its most prominent voice. A notable 2024 controversy arose when the network briefly hired former Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel as a contributor, then reversed course after on-air talent, including Maddow, publicly objected on air. In October 2025, MSNBC formally separated its operations from NBC News as part of Comcast's corporate restructuring; on November 15, 2025 it rebranded as MS NOW, and on January 2, 2026, it became part of Versant Media Group alongside CNBC, USA Network, E!, and SYFY. MaddowBlog, written chiefly by producer and writer Steve Benen, has served as a daily written companion to The Rachel Maddow Show, offering political analysis consistent with the network's progressive-liberal orientation.
