Background
MSNBC launched on July 15, 1996, as a joint venture between NBC and Microsoft, with Microsoft investing $220 million for a 50% stake in the cable channel, aiming to merge broadcast news with the emerging internet. Microsoft sold its stake in the cable network in 2005, and by 2012 had fully exited the venture. MSNBC's editorial identity shifted significantly in the mid-2000s toward progressive opinion programming, a direction it publicly embraced with its 2010 'Lean Forward' marketing campaign. Comcast acquired NBCUniversal in 2011, placing MSNBC under one of the country's largest media conglomerates. In November 2024, NBCUniversal announced plans to spin off most of its cable properties; MSNBC rebranded as MS NOW on November 15, 2025, and Versant Media Group — which also holds USA Network, CNBC, E!, Syfy, and other channels — became an independent, publicly traded company on January 2, 2026. Throughout its history the network has faced criticism for blurring the line between news reporting and partisan commentary, particularly in primetime; its own on-air talent have acknowledged that liberal viewers tune in expecting critical coverage of Republican administrations. Under the Trump second term, the network expanded Rachel Maddow's airtime to five nights a week and sent reporters into the field to document the effects of Trump administration policies, maintaining a broadly critical editorial posture.
