Background

MSNBC launched in July 1996 as a joint venture between NBC and Microsoft, whose initials formed the channel's name. Microsoft sold its stake in the cable channel in 2005, leaving NBC — later NBCUniversal under Comcast — as the sole owner. Through the late 2000s, the network shifted away from traditional hard news toward primetime opinion programming featuring liberal commentators such as Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, and Chris Matthews, formally embracing that identity with its 'Lean Forward' slogan around 2010; by that year it had surpassed CNN in primetime ratings for the first time since 2001. It built its brand around progressive opinion hosts and earned consistent criticism from media analysts and conservative critics for favoring Democratic Party narratives and the establishment left, with Media Bias/Fact Check rating it 'Left Biased' and 'Mixed' on factual reporting. In November 2024, Comcast announced plans to spin off most of its cable networks; MSNBC simultaneously broke away from the NBCUniversal News Group and rebranded as 'MS NOW' (a backronym for 'My Source News Opinion World') on November 15, 2025, building its own independent newsgathering operation under president Rebecca Kutler. The Comcast spin-off was completed on January 2, 2026, making Versant Media Group — which also includes USA Network, CNBC, E!, and other cable properties — an independent publicly traded company. Facing secular declines in cable viewership, the network has announced plans to launch subscription products as part of a broader pivot away from dependence on traditional carriage fees.
