Background

KIRO-AM launched in 1927 and came under LDS Church ownership when Bonneville International was formed in 1964 to consolidate the Church's media holdings. On July 15, 1974, KIRO adopted an all-news format, one of the first commercial stations in the U.S. to do so, and by 1985 it ranked among the ten most-listened-to stations in the country.
