Background

Nation's Restaurant News was founded in 1967 by Lebhar-Friedman, a New York-based trade publishing house, to serve the fast-growing U.S. restaurant industry. It established itself as the leading trade journal for restaurant chains, operators, and suppliers over the following decades, covering everything from menu innovation to foodservice finance. In December 2010, Penton Media acquired the publication to anchor a broader foodservice media group that also included Food Management and Restaurant Hospitality. Penton was itself acquired by British events and data company Informa plc in 2016 for approximately $1.6 billion, bringing NRN under its Informa Connect Foodservice division. Under Informa, NRN has expanded its digital presence — the website draws roughly 660,000 monthly users — alongside a print circulation of more than 66,000. The publication does not carry a political editorial line; its reporting lens is commercial, examining how macroeconomic forces, labor markets, immigration enforcement, and trade policy ripple through restaurant industry profitability. In that capacity it has reported critically on tariff uncertainty and immigration crackdowns under the current administration where they have raised costs or tightened labor supply for restaurant operators, but without adopting an advocacy posture.
