Background

William F. Buckley Jr. founded National Review in 1955 to build an intellectual conservative movement. It was known for combining traditional conservatives, libertarians, and anti-communists, and for pushing out views it considered extreme. Rich Lowry, chosen by Buckley, has been editor since 1997. In 2015 the magazine and website became a wholly owned subsidiary of the nonprofit National Review Institute, which relies on donations and grants. In 2016 it ran a high-profile 'Against Trump' issue, and it was one of the best-known conservative outlets opposed to his first nomination. Since then it has often supported Trump administration policies on taxes, judges, and deregulation while criticizing his conduct, tariffs, and other measures. In 2026 its editorials have repeatedly argued that Trump's tariffs raise prices, hurt businesses, and rely on executive action that Congress should limit. Critics on the right call it insufficiently loyal to Trump, and critics on the left see it as a reliable voice for conservative economic positions. The sources I found show its tariff criticism clearly, but I did not review its coverage of other Trump policies.
